Reconsidering Star Wars IV in the light of I - III.

Interesting read, and it makes a lot of sense.

That's... not half bad.

At the very least, it makes the chess game a lot more fun!

I wish people would stop trying to make sense of the mess left by Mr Lucas :(

Interesting. R2D2 being an undercover agent I definitely buy - I reckon he'd have considered himself an undercover agent even if the rebellion knew nothing about him.

I also buy the bit about Obi-Wan being on Tatooine not just to protect Luke, but to kill him if that proved necessary.

I don't buy Chewbacca being a top undercover agent for 20 years, though. The timing doesn't seem right for Chewie to get to Tatooine by dumping a cargo after R2D2 and C3PO bail out. More likely, I think, is that Chewie just disappeared himself after Kashyyk fell, as did many other ranking Republican loyalists. Any one of those loyalists could have wound up in the Tatooine area, but it was Chewie who actually did. Obi-Wan knew he might one day need help, so he kept track of old loyalists in the area, and knowing that he could count on Chewie, went to the Mos Eisley Cantina where he knew he could find him and Han. People tend to underestimate the frequency of coincidence, to the extent that writers often have to downplay coincidence to avoid loss of suspension of disbelief, so if trying to explain Star Wars, I'm inclined not to go overboard covering up coincidence.

And when it comes to the Jawas, it didn't look like R2D2 made a deal with them. More likely, I'd say, is that R2D2 just planned to put himself in front of the sandcrawler that was heading the way he wanted to go. R2D2 would have had the expertise to find such a sandcrawler from space, before ejecting in the lifepod.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
