Just beautiful...

I actually got a little bit of time to play a bit of World of Warcraft tonight.

I'm currently playing one of the new races, a Blood Elf. At some point I had picked up an amulet from a creature I had killed, and the amulet had an inscription on it giving it to Sylvanas Windrunner from her sister Alleria. Sylvanas is the current leader of the independent undead (the Forsaken) in the Warcraft Universe, however she used to be a high elf before she became an undead. The Blood Elfs also used to be high elfs, before they lost their homeland to invasion.

So, when you pick up the amulet, you get a quest to return it to Sylvanas Windrunner, the Banshee Queen of Undercity. I've had the quest in my log for a while, and finally was going near Undercity so I went and handed it in. I then saw what I think has to be my favourite "scene" in all of my time playing World of Warcraft.

You give the amulet to Sylvanas, and in the quest message box, her first reaction is one of shock and seemingly of pleasure at the return of the amulet. Then she catches herself and pretends it means nothing to her and she drops it on the ground. You then click ok, and the quest is complete. However, the scene is far from over.

Sylvanas casts some magic, and five "Highborne Lamenters" (other Banshee's) appear behind her, and she starts singing, and it has to be one of the most beautiful pieces of music that I have heard in a long time. The song itself goes for almost three minutes, with Sylvanas and her backing singers going the whole time. At the end she picks up the amulet, and seems a bit lost in her memories. A beautiful scene.

After listening to it, I wanted to hear it again, this time without all the other game noises interfering, and I was wondering where I could get a copy of it. Then I remembered I have a copy of the Burning Crusade soundtrack that came with the Burning Crusade Collectors Edition of the game. I had a look, and yes, it's there, called Lament Of The Highborne, so I've been listening to it a few times. After a bit of research, I found out you can play the song in game as well, by using a little bit of scripting.

Type the following into the chat box, or turn it into a macro:
/script PlaySoundFile("Sound\\Music\\GlueScreenMusic\\BCCredits_Lament_of_the_Highborne.mp3")

It's a lot of work for a piece that will only appear at most once per Horde character, however I am very impressed.

actually using MyWarCraftStudio the structure is in $worldofwarcraft\data\common.mpq[\sound\music\gluescreenmusic\bcredits_Lament_of_the_highborne.mp3]

if you wanted to extract it without a copy of the collectors edition. I assume because it's in common.mpq not expansion .mpq its in every copy of WoW now (ver 2.0+) i assume so people with the expansion standing there at the same time can still hear it.

oh just as a note before anyone gets the wrong idea... Its allowed to pull those files (*.mpq) apart and do what you want to them... you can even share what you do just as long as you understand that its all owned by blizzard.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
