Connex + Heat = Bad News

I will admit that I have come to expect any plan involving Connex (the company that runs the rail network here in Melbourne) is most likely going to end in a clusterfuck.

However, it's not all their fault.

A story in today's Age has a photo that shows one of the problems that Connex has to deal with.

Ouch!

Today's expected maximum: 43C (about 109F), tomorrow should be about the same, with the temperatures on the weekend dropping to the low to mid 30's.

Yeah, they can't help the tracks buckling. but perhaps if the trams hadn't been bought from places in EUROPE they might be coping better. Maybe they forgot that Melbourne gets hot sometimes?

Heh - I'd always been vaguely suspicious that the "tracks buckling" thing was all a smokescreen of lies... That's...really enlightening... Maybe Connex should put that picture on their front page for a while, to deflect some of the criticism. Oh wait... that would assume their website wasn't down.

Connex's capacity planners just must want to shoot themselves. Imagine the job...

Capacity planner to boss "Um...we can't meet our peak capacity on trains...and...um...not that you care...but we also can't even meet peak capacity on our website..."

Boss: "Silence Worm! Get back into your cage!"

I am quite sure that there are engineering solutions to this heat problem. You know...metal which buckles at a higher temperature, and air-con rated for 40+ degrees, not 35 degrees. It costs money to change, but public transport is generally a sound investment for a government to make. What, after all, are my taxes for?

Unfortunately, Connex is privatised. Which means that anything that takes money away from the bottom line is A Bad ThingTM.

They wouldn't actually need to use a different metal for the tracks though - just give each piece of track a little more longtitudinal expansion space. They only buckle when they have nowhere to go as they expand.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
