Heh - Baen Books discovered this with their free online books many years ago. Every time one of an author's books went up for free, sales went up not only for all their other books, but for the free book as well.

Mainstream books companies are only just now beginning to ponder doing this (like putting up Neil Gaiman's American Gods for free briefly), but they're still getting it wrong (can't be downloaded and has to be read online on their shitty reader that doesn't work properly etc.)...

Musicians who are not uber mega famous generally benefit enormously from putting their works online for free. Such musicians generally make almost nothing from their CD sales, but rather make their money from live gigs. Free online music shows their wares to prospective gig attendees.

I'm not holding my breath on the MPAA and RIAA ever, ever working this out, alas. They've bunkered down so hard these days that they see their customers as the enemy and believe the best advertising is an agressive court case...

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
