Goodbye Connex...

...don't let the door hit you on the way out.

Connex has not been given the new Melbourne Train contract, and Yarra Trams has not been given the new Tram contract.

My rage about the train system has burned like the heat of a thousand suns on several occasions since I moved to Melbourne, but I do wonder how responisble Connex really is.

Apparently the infrastructure is owned by the government, so the overcrowding, and the tracks that keep stuffing up on warm days, and the train air-con that fails in summer are actually all the fault of the state government. The fun thing about outsourcing is that you can outsource the blame, and then when things suck so bad that "Something Must Be Done" you change providers, and buy yourself several more years of outsourcing the blame to someone else.

Given that we'll have the same infrastructure and the same staff, I really can't see how much a new provider can change, other than the logo on the uniforms.

Unfortunately the article also puts a lot of focus on the claim that getting rid of Connex won't make any difference.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
