Hot, damn hot...

Well, it looks like Brisbane is preparing for a very hot summer.

Finished work yesterday at 6, and according to the radio it was 31C (87.8F). According to the display on one of the building I drove past it was 35C (95C).

Todays temperatures where somewhat similar. However, the major difference was that today I was at home, while yesterday I was at work in the air conditioning.

This morning I went and did a bit of shopping and bought a 50 litre bag of potting mix, and a 12 litre bag of seed raising mix. Then I came home and cleaned out a planter, and then filled it and another planter I had bought with potting mix, topped off with the seed raising mix, and then I planted some seeds in them.

Better Homes and Gardens magazine (and yes, I buy it) gave away a free packet of seeds of mixed salad greens last year, and mixed herb and garden plats this year, and I decided to plant them.

I figured one planter for each should do. I was wrong. The salad greens seeds got planted in both of them, and I think I need more planters.

Also today I set up the air coolers in the house. The big one is blowing into the living room. One of the small ones (the one that doesn't currently cool) is blowing into the computer room and the other small one that Glenn gave me last week is blowing into my bedroom.

They've been on all day and are already making a big difference. Not as good as refridgerative air conditioning, but enough of a difference for me to keep on topping them up with water.

This evening I had dinner with Mum & Dad. Yesterday they left home at 5am and travelled to the north coast and spent the afternoon at Australia Zoo with Ed (Dad's friend who's visiting from Canada). Everyone should know about Australia Zoo, it's the one with the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin.

Today it was travel down from Cabulture to put Ed on the plane back to Canada. Mum's glad to get rid of him. He's a male chauvanist, and refuses to accept answers from a woman. Since Mum runs the place and Dad lets her, things weren't running all that smoothly. Plus Mum and Dad have been living by themselves since Glenn moved out (about 5 years ago) so Mum wasn't coping well with an absolute stranger (to her) living in her house messing things up.

We had a beautiful dinner. We went to The Bull and Cactus Bar & Grill, Logan Rd, Mt Gravatt, opposite Garden City Shopping Centre where The Keg used to be.

Entree was two serves of garlic bread for the three of us, and what I think was called the Grazers Platter. The garlic bread was superb, moist with a strong garlic flavour, unlike the dry stuff you usually get that tastes like it may have been in the same room as some garlic, once. The platter was three small BBQ Pork Ribs, three BBQ chicken wings (aka Buffalo Wings), three Bacon Potato skins and three deep-fried somethings that I can't remember the name of but sounded Mexican. Delicious.

Mum and Dad both had the Beef 'n Ribs combo, and I had a rump steak with prawns in a garlic and cheese sauce. All three steaks were cooked perfectly even though all three of us have them cooked differently, Mum has rare, I have medium-rare and Dad has medium-well. Mum couldn't finish hers (that's one point to their side) but Dad and I did (two points to ours). Just beautiful.

I recomend any local Brisbane people to go there. Great food, very friendly staff, nice atmosphere.

We walked back to their hotel, and I came home.

Last night and tonight I played some more the the World of Warcraft open beta. It's a brilliant game and I am having a lot of fun with it. However, they are still suffering from some server breaking issues. Last night the game wouldn't allow me to interact with anyone else, forcing me to log out, and then the server wouldn't allow me to log back in. This evening my character died, and the game refused to go any further from that point, not even allowing me to log out or quit the game (I ended up having to kill it my self).

However, overall still very good game and worth the effort.

Oooh! Planty stuff! I've got 4 or 5 soil-filled planters on my balcony that I plan to start a succulent garden in.

Just need time, inclination and money!

I've got a couple of funny purple leafy things, that aren't really succulents, but you can have bits of anyway. they've got rosettes of leaves purple on the underside & green on the tops. Quite pretty & may help you feel enthused & they're utterly free.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
