Reading problems.

I must be very ill.

I'm not reading.

In the last six months I have done very little reading. By reading, I mean, for pleasure, grab a good book, curl up in the corner and not notice the house burn down, type reading.

Now, for those who don't know me that well, when I was younger I used to get in trouble when I helped unload the groceries, because I'd notice something interesting on the side of a box and stop what I was doing to read it.

I haven't bought a book in over a year I think.

That's not me!

As a result I am making a deliberate effort to start reading a lot again.

I am currently reading The Magic of Recluse by L. E. Modesitt, Jr. First in the Recluse series, it has an interesting system of magic. I'm only about a third of the way through the book (most of that last night), but I'm enjoying it a lot.

I'd forgotten how much fun a good read can be.

OK people, suggestions for books. I love good sci-fi and fantasy, so what are your suggestions.

I have most of the Recluse series if you like them... The other Modesitt books are better though.

I shall make you a list of things I consider worthwhile, with attention to ones I have...

As far as I am aware, I have most of the Recluse books. Borrowed them off Byron a while ago (nearly a year now, oops) which is why I started reading them again.

Enjoying them so far, so if the his other books are better, I can't wait.

Ok, you've mentioned Anne Bishop many times in your own LJ, who is she? It's not a name I know.

Re:
She's great.

She's written 4 books in one 'world' (a trilogy and a book that started out as a footnote).

And she's just over half way through another trilogy.

Central characters tend to be female. Magic system in both worlds is fresh. I like her characters, and there's a kind of sensuality to her writing.

If you're feeling particularly rich, hunt down a copy of "Ophelia's Salvation". It used to be available through Xlibris, but now there's very few copies around.

It was written by my friend Mary, and is truly fantastic. Depressing-like, but everybody I've ever met raves about it.

I know it's not fantasy, but again, this is one of the very few non fantasy books I've read in ages anyway...

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
