Web Hosting Advice

Something for the geeks in the audience.

I'm having problems with my web host (Eno Technologies). They were fine while I was just hosting a few static pages for myself, but now that I'm managing my Wow Guild's web site with Forums, Roster and Instance schedules, I'm finding they aren't enough.

I've had two trouble tickets in for a while (one in July, one in August) with no resolution. One of them was I tried to make a MySQL database for the forums to run off, and the interface they provide didn't work and had all sorts of errors. Eventually the guy I was dealing with ended up making the database manually, and gave me the details, but because it was done manually I can't back it up or restore a back via the control panel they provide. The second one was the file upload issue I talked about here. That issue isn't fixed after the guy I was dealing with basically said he had no idea how to fix it and gave up. I've managed to put a kludgy work around into place, but it's not nice and I would rather have it working as it is supposed to.

As far as I can tell, Eno is a one man operation, and that one man just doesn't have the technical knowledge to cope with what I want to do.

One other problem I am having is that the website is basically unusable from 10 or 11 at night until 1 or 2 in the morning. The static pages work fine, but anything that uses the MySQL database (which is all the content that people actually want to use) will tend to time out 90% of the time. This is not acceptable, especially since that tends to be when I need to update information after a Guild Raid.

So, I am going to be changing Web Hosting companies. Anyone got any advice?

Before anyone suggests it, I am not going to host it myself. Two reasons for this.

Firstly, I do not have the technical knowledge to do it all myself. Secondly, I do not want to host a website that uses about 5G of bandwidth a month on my 256k upload ADSL. :)

What I specifically need in a Web Host is PHP and MySQL, covering at least 5 domains, plus the usual mail and the like.

I've looked at Server101 and they look promising. The Gold Level account is 5 domains, 600Mb web space, 24Gb bandwidth and include PHP and MySQL for just $53 a month. Plus I could easily upgrade to the Platinum hosting if I want more web space, bandwidth or domains for $88.60 a month.

Anyone have any Web Hosts that they recommend?
