I need a car, sort of...

While Melbourne's public transport is heaps better than Brisbane's was, there are times when public transport isn't quite enough.

For instance the last tram from the city to home leaves at 1:19am on the Friday, and the first one Saturday morning isn't until 5:55am, so getting home after a Friday night out is a bit hard if I don't have a lift. Also, it can take a while to get some places via public transport, and it's not that good if you want to carry large or heavy items.

If I want to do any of that I either have to rely on getting lists from people (not always possible) or find an alternative.

I saw an ad inside a Tram a while ago that showed a reasonable alternative. A company called Flexicar deal with car sharing and car rentals. The deal is that after you join you are able to rent any of the cars they own at any time in hourly blocks. All you do is go online and book a car from a location, and then go to that location, swipe your Flexicar card along the windscreen and the car unlocks and you're ready to go. You then return the car to that same location before the end of your booking, lock it up and walk away.

You don't pay for fuel, cleaning, maintenance or any of those things, just the hourly or daily rate.

The base membership is pay $10 a month, get one free hour rental a month, and pay $12 an hour or $80 a day for all use (11pm to 7am counts as one hour). For heavier users there are $50, $100 and $200 plans, where you get that amount of credit and a 5%, 10% or 20% discount on the base rates.

Sounds like it could be really handy for occasional use which I would have. Anyone have any experience with them? Thought?
