Me, Racing Stripes

Enough with the ads already!

One of the first things I do each morning is check the news, usually via my iGoogle web page. On that page I have The Age National Headlines, ABC News: Breaking Stories and Reuters: Oddly Enough (for a little bit of WTF in the morning).

This morning all five of the headlines from The Age sounded interesting, so I opened up the actual The Age web pages for each of them for me to read.

However, I couldn't actually read any of the full articles. The reason: the stupid ads.

I'm pretty good at ignoring online ads most of the time. I see them all over the place and can usually just tune them out. However, this morning all 5 of the pages had one of two election ads from the Liberal party, and they pissed me off.

Two reasons. Firstly, they were all animated flash ads that moved really quickly. The constant flicker, flicker, flicker, flicker as I was trying to read the text has already given me a headache from what little I was able to read.

Secondly, it's the usual Liberal fear-mongering campaign, bullshitting on about how interest rates are going to rise under labour, and the Unions will take over, and Labor is a bunch of "fanatics", "extremists" and "learners". I can't wait till this election is over and the bullshit stops for another 3 years.

I just sent a comment to The Age via the Contact Me section about the first of the points, not the second (keeping it impartial). Lets see if I get any sort of response.

EDIT: Thanks to jdhorner for reminding me of the ways to get rid of those blasted things. I already use Firefox, and added the newest version of the Adblock Plus and the Adblock Filterset.G Updater, and now those ads don't show any more.

Woot! Thanks.

Almost there...

Well, the Arcanacon timetable seems to be mostly sorted out, even though the website isn't live yet EDIT: and the events are live on the website.

As a result you can log into AON and sign up for games, assuming you know what the games actually are. :)

Currently I'm doing the Freeform Unions and Intersections in Session A (Friday 1:00pm) and Session F (Saturday 8:00pm), and the table top Back in the Biz... every other session.

I already have one player signed up for both games (Thanks Duncan :) )

I might need another GM for Back in the Biz..., as I've marked down I can theoretically do two games at once for it (except for the sessions that I'm running Unions and Intersections, where I'm listed as being able to do one). The plan is to do a test run of the game with my backup GM and some others (probably other GM's as they probably won't get a chance to play at the con) some time before the convention, most likely in early to mid January.

So, anyone want to volunteer to be my second GM for that game? Must love Shadowrun (4th Edition) and be able to cope with my brain. :)

And the wheels on the car go round and round...

I've just joined Flexicar.

The deal is that I pay $10 a month and can use any of their fleet of cars around the city for $12 an hour (I get one free hour an month), with the hours of 11:00pm to 7:00am counted as one hour. That cost covers just about everything, including insurance and petrol.

There's one just up the road from me at work (about 500 meters away), so using them when I'm at work will be easy.

The nearest one to home is about a 10 minute tram ride away, so it won't be too bad if I need to use one during "normal hours", but if I want to use one outside of when the trams are running (which I see as being likely) it will be about a half hour walk.

Of course, if I decide to use it frequently, I can upgrade my account and end up paying less per hour, with a $50, $100 and $200 plan giving a 5%, 10% and 20% on the hiring fee respectively.

So, it should be interesting. If anyone else decides to join, let them know I recommended you, as that gives both of us 3 free hours driving. :)
