Images of Tragedy
Some times it's hard to understand the scope of a tragedy, from just hearing about it.
The fires that started on Saturday in country Victoria have been classified as the worst natural disaster in Australian history.
The Age has a collection of reader photos during the fires, and photos of the aftermath. I had a look at a map, and Yarra Glen, one of the places mentioned in the first collection of photos, is less than 50km from my home. Kinglake, the place with the highest count as a result of the fires, is only about 75km away (about 46 miles). That's terrifying.
And what's worse is that authorities believe that a number of the fires were deliberately lit.
A word of warning: some people may find the pictures disturbing.
