Concerned

I'm not sure how The Big Weekend is going to go this year.

I just got sent the pre-reg information about my two games.

I currently have no one registered for the freeform Homeward Bound, and a team of 4 and a team of 2 for the Paranoia tabletop The Reunion Mission.

There is currently a total of 50 player pre-registered. I suppose that I should be happy that over 10% of the pre-registrations are playing one of my games, but still...

I hope it works.

Brisbane roleplayers = apathy

I think 'Brisbane' is being too specific. Its really hard to get momentum up for cons - its like trying to get employed. You need experience to get experience, except in this case you need enthusiasm to get enthusiasm...

Having lived most of my life there, and having now experienced Melbourne's gaming community, believe me - I meant what I wrote :-)

I don't think it is just a case of apathy this time. Apparently there were some issues getting The BIG Weekend running, and as a result it is greatly reduced in scope. There are only six non-Living tabletop games being presented, one of them halloranelder's and another one of them mine. I have a total of three players signed up for mine. Three more out of the six are a trilogy of D&D games set in the world of The Princess Bride. There is also one freeform, that being halloranelder's.

So, to say that the choice of roleplaying games is limited is quite an understatement. Under those conditions, I have been expecting either halloranelder and I to be swamped all weekend, or for virtually nobody to bother turning up at all.

Given that around 50 players have signed up in total, and there is no miniature gaming happening at all, I'm guessing that a lot of those players are Living gamers. The Living games will be as good as ever, due to the nature of Living campaigns (ie available to be played whenever you can persuade an authorised GM to run them for you, not written specifically for a convention).

So all those miniatures events on the BIG website are cancelled?

To me it looks like "living-con" + wargames weekend...

Hmmm... Looks like I've not stayed up to date. I hadn't looked at the website in months. A couple of months ago, I was contacted about running my game, and informed that TBW was being stripped down and there would be no miniature events. I guess they changed their minds (perhaps after learning that there would be bugger-all in the way of non-Living roleplaying).

We've been getting dicked around by the organisers of this event too, if that is any consolation.

How so? I haven't actually been dicked around organisationally myself, but that could well be because I have just informed them I would run my game, then pretty much ignored the whole deal until now.

The BIG Weekend
We're up to 100 pre-reg now. Not bad for around 1 month of advertising. We're expecting some more through the door on Friday night.

Sure, we've had a lean year - but look at the past few years! 400+ people for the last two years ... we're surely entitled to a lean year?

And just for the record, I step down this year as Event Coordinator/Registration Coordinator after 10 years of service to The BIG Weekend. Thanks go to all those who made my 10 years memorable.

Re: The BIG Weekend
Cool. Feeling a little less concerned now.

And as for "I step down this year as Event Coordinator/Registration Coordinator after 10 years of service to The BIG Weekend", I'll beleive it when I see it! :)

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
