It's just a fucking haircut!

I'm been in Melbourne for over 9 months now, and in that time I have had one haircut here.

Back in Brisbane I went to a Men's Barber where I paid between $15 and $20 each time I went in. It was simple and cheap.

The one haircut I have had here, I went to the hairdressers down a bit from work and was charged $45 for the privilege of having some guy do less than I used to get done back in Brisbane. Oh, they also washed my hair for me before the cut, something I didn't have a choice in which was a wasted effort in my mind because I washed my hair that morning before going to work.

While I was visiting my folks over Christmas Mum gave me another trim (she's good at that sort of thing, and has done mine, my brothers and my fathers hair over the years), so in the last 10 months or so I have had 2 haircuts.

I do need another one, so I went for a wander to see what other options there were. Two of the three hairdressers I walked past had the only person in there walking out locking the door behind them as I approached, so I wasn't going to get a hair cut there. The other hairdressers actually had people in it, so I went in and asked how much for a basic trim. The answer? $60 for a men's haircut. I thanked him for his time and left.

No fucking way am I paying $60 for that.

What does it take to get a good basic haircut for a reasonable price? What I would like is a place preferably near work or home that isn't going to require a personal loan for a basic haircut. Maybe even somewhere in the city, as I am reliant on public transport, so I don't want anything too hard to get to.

This is giving me the shits.

Look for a barber rather than hair dresser?
Bearing in mind that its no longer relevant for me :)

A set of clippers, 2 mirrors & a steady hand.
Or a good friend with steady hands.

Or visit your mum regularly.

Good luck with the hair, sweetie.

Melbourne Gothic Glamour in Thornbury only charged me $20 for Lew to get his cut and coloured, and they're really nice. (And they do "normal" styles and cuts, too, they just specialise in alternative stuff, and the atmosphere is nicer than in an ordinary hair dressers'.)

It's on High Street, and a few doors up from a VERY cool secondhand bookshop.

Look in whitepages for 'hairdressing school' or similar. They fix your hair for free if the students fuck it, often streak it and similar if anything happens (in compensation, perhaps?), and because they're having their students practice it's very cheap.

I cut my own hair, but my sister did a hairdressing traineeship.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
