Partially out of contact

From the looks of it, the people who do my web-hosting have lost connectivity. I suspect this is due to the fires that have ravaged Victoria in the last couple of days.

One side of this is that none of the email at those domains is working, and I can neither send or receive. If you need to contact me over the next little while, please do it directly via my mobile, via Facebook, or via my gmail account (HalloranElder).

EDIT: Rephrase that. I can sort of send and receive, but it's intermittent. No guarantee when something sent to me will get to me.

Aren't you with Internode?

My ISP is Internode, my web hosting is with someone else.

Ahh, gotcha.

You're with a local webhost?

Sort of.

Quadra Hosting are local, but most of their infrastructure is in the US (faster speeds). From the looks of it some of their DNS servers are in Australia which seems to be what the problem is.

When I first checked my email, everything was fine, then 10 minutes later none of my domains were resolving, now they are again.

Yep, DNS.Have a look at http://www.opendns.com/

I've found them excellent, and they're not reliant on any particular ISP/Webhost. Free also.

Thanks, but that wasn't the problem.

It wasn't that I couldn't resolve the addresses, it was mainly that Internode could resolve the addresses. Internode check all outgoing mail to make sure the From address is a valid domain. If they can't find the domain the from address is pointing to, they won't allow the email to be sent.

That's what happened which was the first thing to alert me to the fact that something might be wrong.

You do know that you can turn that behaviour off - it only happens if you use the Internode SMTP server. If you use your domain's SMTP server then you can set up whatever checks you want and none you don't.

On the other topic, have a look at OpenDNS anyway. They have benefits.

Actually I was just glad to see a post from you on my flist-- I didn't know exactly where you're located in relation to the fires. Glad you're ok!

Yep, I'm fine. Thanks for your concern, it's muchly appreciated.

I know people who have friends or family who have been directly effected, so it's close to me, even if it's far away in distance.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
