Some ladies were talking about this in the lunch room here at work today. "How did they know how to do it?" they exclaimed (to each other several times each). Gah! Kids can be dumb, but often aren't that dumb. These things happen, in part, because adults are too stupid to realise that proper education in these matters is far more effective than ignorance in preventing problems.

Agreeing with that. And given that there's so much stuff aimed at young adults/teenagers which is sexual in nature, plus, well, hormones doing what they do, I don't think it's terribly hard to see how they've figured it out. They need education-- and access to contraception (which also means being able to get it without judgement being cast upon them, IMHO).

I feel sorry for the parents. It seems like no one says anything when a teenage girl has a kid, except Today Tonight, to pay them out, and being a parent's rough enough without having to grow up at the same time AND copping a bunch of stigma and bullshit from society. And why is it that if a teenage GIRL falls pregnant to a guy much older than her, no one's pointing at him and going, "Hey, that's illegal!" (Though I've heard there's something like that happening which is connected to this onee; apparently some 16 year old boy's claiming to be the father and is worried about getting done for having sex with the mother who was underage) or "Pedophile!"

Nobody says anything when a 15-year-old girl has a child, no, but if a 13-year-old girl has a child, it can end up on the news, and has done in the past. It's not the age difference that has gotten this boy on the news, it's his being a parent at 13.

Though it shouldn't. The numbers say that this event is not surprising; in fact, should be expected. Last I read statistics on this, something like 1 in 50 kids in western nations lose their virginity before turning 13. Multiply that by the number of 13-year-old kids in those nations which have close media connections with Australia, then multiply by the rate at which unprotected sex leads to pregnancy, the rate at which 12-year-olds fail to use contraception (bet that's not a low number), and a few other such factors... It's not going to come out so low that it should surprise us if this sort of story comes out every few years.

I really don't think parading this sort of thing in the media or, indeed, in a court of law is going to do anyone any good. Many young teenagers are going to have sex, and laws are not going to change that. Reacting punitively (either through the courts or the media) doesn't help.

Incidentally, if this took place in Victoria, all the sex may well have been legal. It depends on exactly what the age differences are (for both the older and younger boys).

Yeah, we were just talking about the fact that some people seem to think if you aren't taught anything about sex you won't go off and "do it". Yeah Right!

Knowing enough to choose responsibly is no bad thing. Knowing enough to abstain because you want to, not because you are told to is no bad thing. Understanding concepts of sexual orientation and gender identity are no bad thing.

So - I guess we'd better not talk about any of those things -- someone might think!

Think about any random 12/13 year old boy you know. Would you want them to be the father of YOUR grandchild? (not that they are going to be, just sayin...)

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
