Unicon Wants Your Opinion

Unicon is currently in preparation stage for this years convention.

Currently planned for Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 4th of October, we're considering increasing the convention from 2 days to three days by starting on Friday the 2nd of October. We want your opinion on this.

A standard Unicon weekend is as follows:

Saturday
Session A: 10:00am to 12:30pm
Session B: 1:15pm to 3:45pm
Session C: 4:00pm to 6:30pm
Session D: 7:30pm to 10:00pm

Sunday
Session E: 10:00am to 12:30pm
Session F: 1:15pm to 3:45pm
Session G: 4:00pm to 6:30pm

We are currently looking at four options.

Option 1 is keep things the same as previous years, running only on the Saturday and Sunday for a total of 7 Sessions.

Option 2 is the Pheno model, with registration from 5:00pm on the Friday, and the first Session 7:30pm to 10:00pm Friday night, for a total of 8 Sessions.

Option 3 is the Arcanacon model, with registration from 2:00pm on the Friday, and the first Session 4:00pm to 6:30pm Friday, and second Session 7:30pm to 10:00pm Friday night, for a total of 9 Sessions.

Option 4 is the Conquest model, with registration from 10:00am Friday morning, and Sessions 1:15pm to 3:45pm, 4:00pm to 6:30pm and 7:30pm to 10:pm Friday, for a total of 10 Sessions.

Please be aware that the Friday is not a public holiday, so that anyone involved on the Friday will have to take time off from work, etc. For University's it looks like the Friday is part of the mid-term break.

So, for those who might be coming to Unicon 2009, what is your preferred option? We're not going to run extra Sessions if we don't believe people want them, so let your voice be heard.

Personally, I'm more more likely to travel 700km for a 3 day con, rather than a two day con. I'm not sure if I speak for all Canberrans when I say that, it's just an observation...

Actually speaking of Canberrans (and NSW and SA), we have our labour day long weekend early in October (we get Monday 5 October off).

Amen.

A longer Con will likely bring more foreigners, and possibly more GMs to fill the extra sessions.

I'm all for the Conquest model.

I'm not sure I'd call Option 4 "the Conquest model". Conquest starts earlier on the first day in order to fit in the same number of sessions with an earlier finish on the last day.

You know me, run games and I will play.

Hmmm, the thing is that unless you get a strong interstate contigent, you may be light on for players during Friday. Mainly due to work.

That's why the Pheno system gets my vote. It gives you another session (and it's true that Unicon sometimes feels like it's other before it starts) and it's still easy for those with full time employment to make it along.

Still, those without may fill in the numbers. I really don't know. It'd really be great if we had a long weekend to put it on.

So, I like option 2. Option 3+ means a day off work to go to the early sessions.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
