You'll all be happy to know (except for possibly you) that I am still here.

I have been having the worst time with my computer for the last month or so, and as a result it was pissing me off, so I was tending to ignore it.

It all started on the 23rd of May.

There's this game out there, called Star Wars Galaxies. Now, a few of my friends were very interested in playing it when it came out (this was before it was released) and we had decided that we were going to play as a group.

As the game developed they published their minimum specs, and I knew that I would have to upgrade my machine before playing, but since that was a few months away, I didn't really have to worry, right?

I get home after work on the 23rd, and check my email, and I find an email that says "Star Wars Galaxies Beta 3 Invite". Bugger.

Since my PIII 800 wasn't up to the PIII 1GHz minimum spec, I had to do an upgrade. So on the 29th I buy myself a new motherboard, a P4 2.8GHz and 512M of memory. That should fix it, right?

My video card isn't good enough to cope, and the game won't even start.

So, on the 5th of June, I buy myself a new video card, an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. Now my system is good enough to play.

And play I do, for about 2 minutes before my machine reboots.

I do all sorts of testing, and about the best I can do is two or three minutes of game play (of any decent game) before the system either dies, or reboots.

I eventually admit defeat, and on the 19th I take all the parts I've bought back to where I got them from in the hope that someone would be able to work out what was going on. Luckily, they did.

The service guy took one look at the boxes of the video card and the motherboard and said "Oh, that motherboard won't work with that video card".

So after a quick swap out of one motherboard for a better one, everything was working together again.

I then find out that program release is one the 26th of June, and the Beta test would finish a few days before that.

So after spending about $1600 (Australia) upgrading my computer so I could beta test this game, I got about four hours of gameplay.

Bugger!

At that point I swore off any further money being spent on this computer for a while. I almost succeeded.

I went shopping with Stephen (paradigmshifty) over the weekend and spent a lot of money.

The first bit of spending was buying myself a new bed! Yay! Unfortunately delivery will be either Thursday or Saturday, but I can't wait to get it.

The second bit of shopping was pure self indulgence. We drove down the coast to go to Fossil, where I bought a watch, some sunglasses and a key fob.

The third piece of shopping I blame Stephen for.

We went to The Disc Shop for Stephen to look at some computer gear, and we ended up leaving after spending a great deal of money.

I walked out with a video capture card, and a DVD burner, plus some blank DVD's and a computer toolkit.

Over the weekend I spend just shy of $3000. Oops.

I think I'm going to have to stop spending money for a while.
