Touristy Things

(Yes, I'm still here. Still reading everything, just not posting much, ok?)

This year marks a first for me. This will be the first time in my life that I won't be having Christmas as my parents place. They're having it at mine!

Mum and Dad are on a cruise at the moment (two weeks going around New Zealand, then two weeks going around New Caledonia, Fiji and the like) and get back to Sydney the morning of Friday the 23rd of December. Of course, Mum didn't want to have to try and organise Christmas in the day and a half after they get back, so I'm hosting it instead. Mum and Dad fly in to Melbourne from Sydney once they get back, and my brother is flying down from the Sunshine Coast on the same day.

They are here from Friday the 23rd till Friday the 30th. Part of that will be doing the Christmas thing, but also there will be tourist stuff.

What suggestions do people have for the tourist stuff? Keep in mind that I don't have my own car, so preferably would like things easily accessible via public transport, or organised tours and the like.

I'm not planning on making an itinerary, just collecting all the options and letting them choose what they want to do. Already pencilled in is the Queen Victoria Markets, Melbourne Zoo and Melbourne Aquarium. What else?

Melbourne Museum. Botanical Gardens. NGV - both St Kilda Road and Fed Square. Cake in St Kilda. Food in Lygon St.

What sort of things do they actually like?

The Whats On melbourne website is good for finding out about all the little shows, special events and free things that are happening in Melb in any particular week.

Is a drive down the Great Ocean Road and to Phillip Island to see the penguins out of the question? (There are buses down to Cowes from Dandenong, I know that much...)

Other stuff? Lygon Street for coffee and pizza, the museum, Scienceworks, the art gallery, a traipse through the city (I think you can get buses out to Chadstone Shopping Centre from Elizabeth Street near Chinatown if they're into shopping), that City Circle tram (which does a heap of touristy places) the State Library usually has some sort of exhibition on for free or minimal cost, I think the old Pentridge has tours, go for a walk along the river from Fed Square, go check out the cheap side-alley restaurants in Chinatown if they like Chinese food, Myer Christmas windows should be still on, um... yeah. I suggested loads of things because I don't know what they might like but hopefully there's something there they might enjoy.

Have fun and have a nice Christmas with them!

Old Melbourne Jail (local), Ballarat or Bendigo (day/two day trip).

For food, get the 109 tram to Port Melbourne and eat at D'Lish Fish. on the pier.

Go to St Kilda and have breakfast in the cake shops at Acland Street.

Aquarium was very expensive the last time I went to go.
We ended up taking the tram down to the docklands and hitting the shops.
The exhibition hall down there still has the plastination exhibit on:

Taking the tram down to St Kilda beach and wandering along the promonade is good. - lots of little trendy cafes to stop in for a rest.

Luna Park - though being from the gold coast, this one might be a fizzer.

The fire museum is fantastic too!

Yum cha in Chinatown.
High tea at the Windsor.
there's a free walk through the city with gold dots on the footpaths.
Melbourne Town Hall does tours (not sure about over Christmas) and I think they're free.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
