The prevention of adoptions by same-sex couples is especially nasty.

I'll be the first to admit I haven't the foggiest notion how Australian legislation trickles through the system (some polisci major I am, eh?) but here's hoping it gets shot down.

I noticed when I saw it on the news that he'd tried to lighten the blow by extending financial rights to all couples, regardless of their composition. I would say he managed to lose the entire gay vote nonetheless, but I don't think he ever had it. Hence the move, he loses nothing, and strengthens his vote among the middle-right and people who just don't like the idea of same sex couples having kids/snogging in public/doing it.

Perhaps to counter it, the gay community could sell it's soul a little. For instance: "Hey, homophobic guys: okay, Howard is trying to prevent men doing it with men, but he's also reducing your chances of ever seeing two women doing it."

I'm betting that the only reason he didn't stuff up the financial rights is that he couldn't make it stick. Ultimately, you specify the beneficiaries of your own estate in your will and the death payout from your superannuation both in your will and directly to the super fund. That will is binding, nature of sexual relationship be damned. Even heterosexual couples are advised to each have clear wills that explicitly name (for instance) their partner as both beneficiary and usually as executor, simply to avoid complications in such a supposedly transparent inheritance. The complications are avoided because the default inheritance path is overridden, generally very decisively. Similarly, any attempt to block homosexual couples inheriting by invalidating their partnership as a marriage is immediately negated in practical terms by such a will.

Since Howard could not legally impose a blanket invalidation of any homosexuals will, there is no point in even really trying to fight the financial side.

Don't think he didn't think about it though. Also consider that he may be aware that a lot of wealthy homosexuals may well vote liberal, but believes that they like their money more than they want recognition of their partnership.

Or am I being cynical?

Superannuation is the big deal, since previously that couldn't be deeded, as I understand it.

You specify the beneficiary of your super to your super fund manager when you join. Same thing. It should still be mentioned and clarified in your will regardless, as other bequests may appear inequitable otherwise.

Oops
Forgot about the tax angle didn't I? Tax-free inheritance. Gotcha. So: financially equivalent to a marriage (ish), but you don't get to be called married. I thought that was the whole basis of "de-facto". I think I'll just piss off and shut up for a bit.

Desert Rose

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of fire
Those dreams are tied to a horse that will never tire
And in the flames
Her shadows play in the shape of a man's desire

This desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

And as she turns
This way she moves in the logic of all my dreams
This fire burns
I realize that nothing's as it seems

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
This rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of her love

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

Sweet desert rose
Each of her veils, a secret promise
This desert flower
No sweet perfume ever tortured me more than this

Sweet desert rose
This memory of Eden haunts us all
This desert flower
This rare perfume, is the sweet intoxication of the fall
